Leicester’s award-winning Indian restaurant, Chutney Ivy, has launched a new charitable campaign to support local schools.

Poppadoms for Pupils will see the restaurant donate £1 from all poppadom orders to two local schools during the next academic year. The money raised will go towards the schools to offer assistance for leisure activities and extra faciltiies to any pupils in need.

Located in the heart of the Cultual Quarter, Chutney Ivy has been at the heart of Leicester’s dining scene for over a decade. Offering traditional Indian fine dining in a contemporary setting, the restaurant has cooked for high profile diners from top theatre stars to the owners of Leicester City Football Club.

Owner, Shaf Islam, has launched the initiative to enable him to give something back to his local community. “Medway Primary school is close to my heart as it’s where I went to as a child, along with Sparkenhoe Primary School which was attended by my children.

“We see a great influx of people into the restaurant, from regular customers to those celebrating a special occasion, but remain acutely aware of the issues facing much of our community in Leicester and further afield.

“Poppadoms for Pupils will allow us to give something back and help children and families in need in Leicester. The majority of our diners enjoy poppadoms before their meal, and now for each and every serving they’ll know that they’re giving back to the community.

“We hope that through launching this campaign it will inspire other businesses and restaurant owners to get involved.”

Dan Cheetham, Deputy Head of Sparkenhoe Primary School, commented, “We had a lovely time taking some of school children down to Chutney Ivy and enjoying some poppadoms and food to launch the campaign. The money raised will go towards a variety of things, including school trips and helping those children who struggle to afford the trips or other activities offered by the school. It will help us to enhance the children’s education in any way we can, so it’s a wonderful thing to be part of. We’re very excited and honoured to have been asked.”

Steve Williams, Head Teacher at Medway Primary School, added, “We’re delighted to accept the generosity shown by Chutney Ivy. With the money raised we’ll be looking to provide a range of new books for our school library. It’s a fantastic gesture from the owner here.”

The restaurant will be running Poppadoms for Pupils as an ongoing fundraising initiative throughout the year, with the schools benefiting set to change on an annual basis. The donation amount will be automatically calculated from each table’s final bill, without the customer having to do anything.

The campaign launched on Wednesday 6 September and will run ongoing.
