Whilst we all love an exotic break to far flung destinations, sometimes you just need a relaxing night or weekend away. No hassle, just a chance to recharge.

Rutland Hall Hotel & Spa offers the perfect local escape. Just half an hour from Leicester it offers a slice of escapism on your doorstep. On the edge of Rutland Water, the hotel offers a calm and tranquil setting, and has great on site facilities.

Of course the other bonus of a UK getaway is being able to take the dogs with you, and boy is Rutland Hall Hotel doggy friendly. With one of our dog pack in tow we sampled the doggy experience at the hotel and we (and Frank) loved every moment.

The hotel is split into several blocks, each with the majority of rooms overlooking Rutland Water and many with balconies or terraces to enjoy your morning coffee from. The rooms are furnished to a high specification (yes, even the dog friendly rooms), and are both comfortable and spacious. If travelling with a dog you’ll be greeted in your room by a dog bed and gift bag including a toy and treats. A lovely touch. Don’t worry the humans get a treat too… a Nespresso machine.

With entry out onto the gardens it’s a lovely setting for the pooches. Able to enjoy the grounds, you don’t have to venture far from your bedroom to give them a little dose of exercise.

Rutland Hall has undergone a major renovation since their new ownership, and one of the stand out features is the beautiful Blossoms Bar & Restaurant. Set back from the hotel blocks, the restaurant has a wonderful terrace area with BBQ and pizza area, the perfect setting for summer drinks (we’re already planning a return visit in the sunshine), and as you’re entering the main restaurant it’s clear to see there has been a lot of thought gone into the refurbishment.

A large blossom tree graces the bar area (in keeping with the name) and the restaurant has a modern and sophisticated look to it. Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about the dogs. Yes, the restaurant also has a doggy friendly seating area! Sit back and enjoy your freshly prepared meal with your dogs relaxing by your side.

The open kitchen serves up a menu of contemporary classics from the open kitchen, with gnocchi in a stilton cream sauce and slow cooked beef amongst the popular choices. Our stand out item, however, has to be the cheese board. Served under a glass cloche, the large cheese plate is the perfect way to round off a lovely meal (accompanied by one of their fine selection of wines, of course).

During your stay you can also visit the restaurant and terrace to enjoy their daytime menu of wood-fired pizzas, sharing boards, sandwiches and burgers. Or why not indulge in afternoon tea?

The restaurant’s quality continues to shine through at breakfast, with buffet service offering a great selection of dishes with your choice of eggs to order fresh from the chef, as well as a pancake station, continental options and pastries. The perfect way to start your morning before exploring the local area.
