The sunny days might be fading out but Everards have been celebrating the best of pub gardens in the annual awards night for The Spencer Memorial Garden Competition.
Held at last years’ winning garden at The Final Whistle in Southwell, the gold winning Everards Business Owners gathered to celebrate their amazing outdoor spaces and announce the overall winner.
Now in it’s 28th year The Spencer Memorial Garden competition was started in honour of Chairman Richard Everard’s parents. Richard and his sister Serena thought it was a very fitting way of remembering and celebrating their green fingered parents.
22 Gold winners each receive a silver trowel that will hang with pride in their pubs, so keep an eye out to try and spot them!
The overall winners were Tina and Paul at The Greyhound Inn, Burton-on-the-Wolds with their well-established garden, now the winner for the fourth time following their successes back in 2009, 2011 and 2013.
Business owner Tina said: ”We are so proud to take this award back to the pub once again. It really does mean a lot, as you can see from the tears! We have always felt a pub should look cared for inside and out to make it attractive to customers. We enjoy planting and maintaining the gardens and our customers really appreciate it. The compliments we get make the hard work worthwhile! When we moved in 12 years ago there wasn’t a plant or any colour anywhere, so it’s very satisfying to see the garden established and full of colour.”
Feedback from the judges included comments such as “Beautifully maintained”,” We couldn’t find a weed in sight!” and “remarkable garden space.”
The Greyhound Inn was among 130 entrants to the competition, which marked pubs on a range of criteria including kerb appeal, effectiveness of outdoor space and creativity.
The Greyhound is a great pub with a great atmosphere. With the roaring log burner and beautiful award-winning gardens, whatever the weather the Greyhound is the perfect location for drinks, food and meeting good friends.
