Leicester’s newest bar, Sommar, is opening on Hotel Street on Friday 1 July.
The independent Birmingham based brewery has chosen Leicester as their first site outside of the West Midlands and visitors can expect a mix of their own craft brews, premium cocktails, entertainment and more. We chatted to them to find out what’s in store when the doors open.

What is unique about the brewery?
Great question. At our Birmingham-based Brewery we brew up to 5 beers per week, all of which are kegged on a tap-to-order basis, meaning that all of our beer is freshly brewed that week. Guests who visit our Brewery can sit literally feet away from our 5 fermentation vessels (FVs) and brewing equipment.
What made you choose Leicester?
Initially, we began selling our beers to a variety of bars within Leicester, and having visited the city many times, we fell in love with the craft beer scene there and felt we would make a great addition to it. We love the independent scene in Leicester, we’ve received messages of support from venues all over which have blown us away. We’ve already began to build relationships with the likes of St Martin’s House where guests can receive a discount or ORSO coffee who will be supplying our beans directly to us. We’re keen to support the independent scene where possible.
What are you most looking forward to about the opening?
We can’t wait to see the faces of our guests as they walk through our doors for the first time, our team have worked incredibly hard on the interior of the place, it’s very bright & colourful. Personally I’m looking forward to watching our new weekly comedy night take place on Tuesday 5th July featuring a range of professional comedians – all FREE entry too!
What are your favourite beers that you have on?
Personally, I love one of our latest IPAs, Tiger on a Tightrope, an extremely hoppy and tasty little number, however, I think our new beer brewed especially to celebrate the launch of Sommar Leicester, Fox & Tiger, could be a winner!
You also offer premium cocktails, what can people expect from the cocktail menu?
Our guests can expect 2 for £12 cocktails all day, every day regardless of the time. We’ve worked extremely hard on our cocktail menu trying to add little our personalised touches where possible, for example our espresso martini is made using freshly roasted beans! Delicious!
What will set Sommar apart from other bars in Leicester?
We’ve tried our hardest to be as inclusive to all as possible, if you don’t enjoy craft beer we offer a range of traditional lagers, a range of ciders and more, we’re currently building a programme of live events including quiz nights & comedy clubs as well as weekly live music, all of which are completely free for our guests.
