Leicester’s street art scene has boomed over recent years. The success of Bring The Paint has meant that the city centre is home to some incredible pieces. Now, a new exhibition is set to shine the spotlight on the history of graffiti and street art in a totally unique way.
Paint to Pixel is an immersive projection exhibition featuring subway street art and graffiti and it is launching at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery from early February. The showcase, which features large-scale 3D animated projections, will transport audiences into a vibrant virtual world of subway trains adorned with original graffiti artworks from street artists.
You can discover the incredible story of Repainting Subway Art, the culmination of a 10-year project by the Dutch graffiti writer TRIPL/FURIOUS, guest curated by Jasper Van Es. These works are a visually stunning homage to the bestselling book, Subway Art, which captured the exciting spirit of early graffiti art, and helped make the movement famous around the world.
This groundbreaking exhibition is a collaborative effort between Leicester-based arts organization MBD and the aerosol art project team from Graffwerk, the team behind Bring The Paint, which is set to return to Leicester in May.
Thee exhibition will launch on Saturday 3 February 2024 at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery on New Walk, and will run until 27 May. The exhibition itself is divided into two parts:
The first half will host the immersive experience Paint to Pixel, which is MBD’s latest large-scale animated installation. The local arts organization is well known for its work in virtual reality and 3D animation. Complementing the immersive exhibit, the second half will feature archival material and firsthand narratives about street art and graffiti.
Additionally, it will showcase visually striking works resulting from a decade-long project by Dutch graffiti writer TRIPL/FURIOUS, curated by Jasper Van Es, titled Repainting Subway Art. This segment captures the essence of early graffiti and its global impact.
The exhibition sets the stage for the highly anticipated return of Bring The Paint, Leicester’s international street art festival, in May this year. The festival will b running from 20 – 26 May 2024
