Nestled amongst the restaurants at Highcross is an independent gem in the shape of 1573 Bar & Grill.

Situated in the old Grammar School building, 1573 has remained a popular member of Leicester’s dining scene and with a new menu and new kitchen team we caught up with them to find out how how things are going post-lockdown.

How would you describe 1573 to someone who’s never been?

I’d say we do the best steak in town. We’re independent and we’ve survived. We also have a beautiful building in the old Grammar School. We also do an excellent Sunday lunch.

How have you found things since reopening?

Challenging. It’s been very demanding and like everywhere else it’s been a struggle to find enough staff. But we’re so happy to be here and to see our customers again.

What are some of the standout dishes on the menu?

Our steak, no doubt. We use Owen Taylor who won awards for the best sirloin and the quality is fantastic. Of course first and foremost we’re a steakhouse and grill, but we’re really excited to be working on our vegan offering too. We have a six course vegan menu in development at the moment along with vegan wines, and we’ll be launching it very soon. Watch this space.

1573 has been open for a number of years now, how has the restaurant changed over that time?

Our offering has stayed very similar but I’d say we are much more consistent now. The quality of food, the service, the atmosphere, our repeat customers tell us how much they appreciate that.

How does it feel being one of the few independents amongst the larger chains at Highcross?

Proud. We’re just very proud to be independent and survive with this competition around us.
