Located on Churchgate in Leicester you’ll find Langton Furnishers – a family business celebrating their 80th year this year.
Now being run by the 4th generation of the Langton family, the business was established in 1945 as Mr Langton returned from WW2. Known for selling high quality furniture, primarily from UK based suppliers, the shop has been in various locations across Leicester and Leicestershire across the years but has been in its current location on Churchgate since 1980.
We caught up with the current team to find out more for this week’s BID Leicester Spotlight.
How would you sum up Langton Furnishers for anyone who isn’t familiar with the business?
We’ve been a proud family run business since 1945. It’s never been out of our family hands in 80 years. We sell all large furniture, from dining furniture to 3 piece suites and bedroom furniture, all with a very personal and hands on service, which is so important to us and our customers.
The business is family owned and has a local history, can you tell us a bit more about that?
Yes, it’s been in the Langton family since 1945, through four generations. We’ve also been in our current location on Churchgate for 45 years – we’ve seen the local area change so much but have remained here in our lovely showroom. Everyone here is so proud of the family history of the business – they’re a fantastic family to work alongside.
What is your favourite thing about the business?
It would have to be the personal service we offer. So much of our business comes from repeat customers and word of mouth, as they know the level of personal service we offer. We offer free delivery within 25 miles and will always go into houses to assemble any furniture. Everything is done with a personal touch to make the experience as easy and enjoyable as possible for our customers.
How do you find Leicester has changed over the years as an independent business?
The area of Leicester we’re in has changed such a lot in our time here. We have memories of being alongside Mays Electrical, Swiss Cottage, Brucciani’s and many other wonderful independent businesses down here. Churchgate has changed in that regard, but we’re very proud of our showroom and continue to offer that same experience that we have since we moved here 45 years ago.
Tell us about some of your standout items that Langton Furnishers supply?
We offer such a wide range of products, much more than you see in the showroom. The showroom offers a wonderful example of products, but we source from a number of top suppliers, including G-Plan, Parker Knoll, Durester, Highgrove, Axminster, and many others. We also offer a large range of items for our disabled customers, including lift and tilt armchairs and sofas.
What has been your proudest moment working in the business?
It’s just been a privilege to work for the company. The level of service they provide to customers goes above and beyond. Many of the staff have worked here for a long time due to the family feel of the business and I’m proud to work for a company who places customer satisfaction so highly.
