INTERVIEW: WE TRIED KYLIE

As summer approaches and concerts and festivals are on the horizon (fingers crossed), one local band is looking forward to a big outdoor concert of their own. We Tried Kylie perform all of your favourite 80s tracks in their own unique style and we caught up with them to find out all about their plans.

How would you describe We Tried Kylie for anyone who isn’t familiar with you?

We Tried Kylie are a fully live band performing faithfully some of the biggest jukebox classics of the 1980s.

What’s your favourite thing about being in the band?

The fact that we are now seen as a band in our own right. Our followers come to see us just as much as to hear the songs they love us performing. This is beyond humbling!

What are some of your favourite tracks to perform?

It sounds too twee to say but it’s all of those that get everybody in the audience singing back to us. We never self indulge – yes, we need to enjoy playing the songs but the moment the audience embrace it and sing their hearts out along with us it gives the song a whole new life, meaning and a strong passion for us to play.

What sets you apart from other tribute acts?

We have never gone down the typical cliched ‘tribute’ route. It was a very natural evolution of the band responding to the reactions of some of the songs we did in our early years together. It quickly became apparent that our audience favoured certain eras more than others and so we started adding more and more songs from the 80s, but we never set out to imitate or mock the iconic styling of the decade… but more so give a nod to it, but under our own style identity.

Tell us a little about your background in music in Leicester?

All of us have years of independent experience in music and bands in and around the ‘circuit’ of Leicester and surrounding villages, but were all strangers to each other when we met in 2013, where we were brought together to fulfil just a two-night booking.

Who are some of your favourite local acts and local venues?

Leicester has a phenomenal amount of musical talent in all areas be it original or covers bands & artists. There are many great venues dedicated to both concepts throughout the city and county and the passion of some of the venue owners is formidable. We have all played in some of the city’s iconic venues over our years from The (Princess) Charlotte to the Shed, the Attic, Big Wheel, The Donkey, the O2  to name a few within the city to some of the notable venues in the surrounding villages and towns – Groby, Quorn, Ashby, Loughborough, Melton Mowbray to name a few.

You’ve got some big outdoor plans coming up this summer, tell us a little about that?

We are unbelievably thrilled to have gained such a following to enable us to not only continue to stage our own indoor concerts but in 2021 our first dedicated outdoor concert!!. Aside from organised festivals that we have been asked to headline 2021, even amid all the uncertainty, we now have our own dedicated outdoor concert in Hathern, Loughborough on 21st August 2021 attracting a capacity attendance of 2000 people!

The winter season sees a two-date show at the Mountsorrel Memorial Centre on the 10th & 11th December which is our third year return to the venue with an added date due to consistent sell-outs.

Are there are songs you’d love to perform but haven’t yet?

We constantly review our set and listen to our followers and strive to push our own boundaries to offer the best possible sets and performance for our audience. We play 100% live and do not use backing tracks so some songs offer huge challenges – as much as we may really want to perform a song we all agree that if we cannot do this justification with the instrumentation we have then we step aside from it. Also though, naturally there are song choices we don’t all always agree on!! Thats a whole different challenge between us though!!

Where can people see you live and find out more about you?

We have a presence on all social media platforms but our demographic drives the Facebook platform more prevalently. This we find engages more directly with those looking for instant notifications and interaction with not only ourselves but our community of followers.
