Walshy’s Blog: Pre-Season’s Here

So, that’s Euro 2012 over! It was always going to be tough for England! I said from the start that I thought it would be between Spain and Germany and in the end Spain thoroughly deserved the win. 3 major trophies in the last 3 tournaments is a huge feat for them, you can’t even pick out star players as the whole team was outstanding! It seems surprising that after the tournament FIFA has ranked England 4th in the world rankings. I’d say there’s definitely some technical ability lacking in the squad and I think there’ll be some big changes coming through at grassroots level. We really need to be looking at countries like Spain and the way they run their soccer academies for bringing home grown talent through.

Back to life at Leicester City and I think it’s safe to say that Mills going was inevitable. We wish him all the best in his future career and it’s a shame that it never quite worked out for him here. We’ve now got an interesting pre-season around the corner, with the squad back together on Monday! We should start to see some players coming in, but gossip aside we don’t yet know who Pearson’s got his eye on! With 2 key players going he’s definitely going to have to look at bringing in a quality, dominant centre half. I’m delighted to hear that Conrad Logan has signed a new contract at the club, he’s certainly useful cover for Kasper!

There have been some fixture changes for TV announced too. It’s always good to know that you’ve been selected for a TV game, it’s really motivating knowing that everyone’s watching at home! Although obviously you still want everyone in the stands there cheering you on too! Before any of that though the lads have pre-season to get through! They’ll know that their bodies are going to be run into the ground as soon as they get back. There’s a real need to keep yourself fit through the summer now, you can’t just let yourself go and Nigel will be expecting good fitness levels. It’s always good to do as much pre-season as you can and to feature in as many games as possible. We’ve been lucky in recent seasons to have some big pre-season games and this year it’ll be great to play host to Sunderland. Welcoming Martin back to Leicester is always a special occasion for the fans! I’d imagine most of the first team will feature in the Sunderland game so it’s a great chance to see the squad before the first game of the season. With the Torquay cup game being before the first game I can’t see Nigel risking too many players in that game, which isn’t great for the league cup, but it’ll be interesting to see who features in these early matches!

In other exciting news, we’ve got the new kit launch to look forward to! I can’t wait to see what it’s going to look like and I’m expecting something quite special with it being made by Puma this time round. It’ll certainly be interesting to see the new squad photo in a few weeks with some new faces in the new kit! Bring it on.

I don’t want to go without giving a special mention to a lad from mine and Muzzy’s football development centre who has just been signed up by City. Congratulations to 8 year-old Harvey Godsmark, he’s a really special talent and it’s fantastic to see these youngsters being spotted. He’s certainly one for the future and it’s great for Muzzy and I to be able to give something back to the club in some way. Good luck Harvey!

Before I go let me just remind you about my upcoming events! Tickets for An Evening with Mike Tyson are selling like hot cakes and we’ve not sold out of standard tables, with only VIP options left. Before that, on 29th July we’ve got the 5-a-side footy tournament happening! We’ve got spaces left for 10 more teams, so don’t miss out on your chance to play against the Legends up at Goals Soccer Centre!

See you there!
