From Sinatra to Buble, immerse yourself in an afternoon of swing classics, presented by Leicester’s very own internationally acclaimed singer, entertainer & trumpet player, Gareth John.

The Story of Swing comes to Athena on Sunday 2 November (5pm) and is presented by local star Gareth John, alongside the stunning SOS Big Band and special guests.

Taking you on a musical journey through decades of the iconic genre of swing and big band music, the show will feature the classic, much-loved hits of Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr, right through to modern day crooners such as Michael Buble, Robbie Williams, Matt Goss, Paul Anka and Harry Connick Jr.

Gareth is renowned for his top-class showmanship, performing from the heart with huge passion for the genre. His stage presence and natural rapport with the audience are second to none. During his career he has shared the stage with many household names, including performing and recording with members of The Beautiful South, The Specials, The Style Council, The Jam, and many more. As well as fronting New Orleans-inspired funky brass outfit, King Brasstards, he continues to tour both the UK and abroad, entertaining the nation with his warm stage presence and charisma.

Gareth commented, “I’m so excited for this show. Leicester is and always will be my home, and it’s been nearly two years since we last performed in the city. The show has changed and evolved so much since then, and to be able to share this special evening with family, friends and the public of this great city will be incredible.”

The event is no doubt a double celebration, as Gareth will also launch his long-awaited third album, The Other Side on the night, backed by an expanded 15 piece band, performing songs from the album as well as big band and swing classics. He joked: “It feels like (this album) has taken so long, it deserves a big launch! I really am very proud of it. It’s been such a team effort and I think perfectly blends all the different parts of who I am as an artist now on one record.”

Covering nearly 100 years of swing and big band music means that Gareth pays homage to many of his heroes. He added: “For me personally, I’m a huge Bobby Darin fan so performing his hits like ‘Mack The Knife’ is always a thrill. I’m always most compared to Michael Buble and that section of the show is certainly a challenge – high energy with songs like ‘Sway’, ‘Cry Me A River’ and ‘Feeling Good’ but I love it! There’s something for everyone in this show and the music is incredibly played by the incredible SOS Big Band, who in my view are the best band in the country.” Under the leadership of multi-talented Musical Director Benjamin Dady, the band will be expanded for this special date, featuring some of the UK’s brightest young jazz talents.

The Story of Swing takes place at Athena on Sunday 2 November at 5pm. Tickets are on sale now priced from £27.50. VIP Cabaret Seating is also available.
