peter pizzeria

There’s no doubt about it, the new home of Peter Pizzeria at Welford Place is one of the most impressive restaurant buildings we’ve been in in a long time. But will the pizzas match up to the interior?

Peter Pizzeria already have a succesful base over in Loughborough and there’s been a lot of anticipation for their opening in Leicester. We couldn’t wait to try out their new menu and were straight in there with ordering the special Pizza of the Month, which came with mozzarella, ham, mushrooms, olives and artichokes and also opted for the number 8, with tomato, cured chorizo, gorgonzola and mozzarella.

The menu is simple and uncomplicated, which we like. Just 8 choices of pizza, no dramas or complications… but we bet you’ll still have trouble deciding! Toppings include salami, courgette, sliced black truffle, prawns and more, so there’ll be something to suit every taste.

To start with we went for the Bruschetta Duetto, which comes as 2 mini bruschettas; one with tomato and one with black truffle. Priced at £4.50 it isn’t a bad price for having both options and the black truffle portion is really worth trying! It made a great change from standard bruschetta.

Now, onto the main event. The pizzas! Certainly make sure that you’re hungry as the portion size won’t disappoint. We were lucky enough to be sat in the main room with the enormous pizza oven, so could see everything in action. The toppings on the Pizza of the Month were plentiful, although do watch out for the olives if you have them as a topping as they still had stones in. Don’t break a tooth! On the number 8 pizza the gorgonzola added a great taste to the overall pizza and the cheese wasn’t scrimped on! I’d have maybe thrown on a little more chorizo, but then I do tend to usually overdo things! Plus remember you can always add on some extra toppings when ordering.

The pizzas are true Italian style and come on a very thin base. With this in mind do be careful if you plan on sharing as we did encounter a little table spilling accident when trying to swap over a quarter of each other’s pizza. Just have a word with the staff though and they’ll be happy to segment the pizzas before serving, or even serving as half and half.

As tasty as the pizzas were we didn’t quite manage to finish them all off, but the staff are immediately on hand with a pizza box for you to take it home for your lunch the next day!

Price wise the pizzas are between £6 and £11 so they’re reasonable for the size and service that you get!

If you do have room the dessert selection is worth checking out. They’re all gluten free and come in individual pots so that you can even take it away with you to have later on. What’s more they’re all from a local supplier and you can keep the little jars! We recommend the Orange Cheesecake. It was AmAzing!

Whatever room you’re sat in in the huge restaurant, make sure you go and have a look around at the others. Upstairs you’ll find a large games room, as well as a banqueting table for pizza making parties, and even a lovers corner with a special individual table for 2 in a window away from the rest of the room. The decor is fantastic, with London Undergroud signs, giant Blockbuster letters, movies playing whilst you eat and enough old film posters to keep you looking for ages. To be honest, even if we weren’t hungry it’s the sort of place that we’d enjoy sitting in for a drink on a Saturday afternoon.

The target audience for Peter’s is definitely aimed at the student market and 20 somethings. It’s been done out perfectly and it’s certain to be hugely popular! Overall we’d give it a Cool As Leicester rating of 7/10.
