Softleys is located in the picturesque Leicestershire town of Market Bosworth, one of my favourite spots in the county! For a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of city life it’s the perfect escape. Situated in a grade II listed building, dating back to 1794, this intimate restaurant provides an elegant and enjoyable setting right on the town square.

The restaurant is well known for its popular and delicious a la carte dining but recently they’ve also branched out into afternoon tea. After my mum’s friend visited and told her that the food was “better than tea at The Ritz” we had to go and see for ourselves!

Straight away we weren’t disappointed as we were seated and offered a glass of champagne to start (it’d be rude not to!) I often worry with afternoon tea that there won’t be enough to go around, but there was no issue with that here. With sandwiches including egg and cress, chicken, parmesan and basil, smoked salmon and cream cheese and roasted ham, there was plenty to keep us satisfied. We even had to leave some to make sure we had room for cake.

Beautifully presented, the tea really fit in with the surroundings of the venue and it turned into a most civilised way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Onto cake, what a selection! Macaroons, chocolate eclairs, mini cupcakes, mixed berry tarts and, of course, scones (a choice of fruit or plan). With tea being topped up as we went, we were looked after exceptionally well. Looking around you could see that it was a favourite place for families to come to as there were several groups of parents with children and even 2 girls treating their grandparents.

As we thought the tea was over the waitress came over and presented us with a lemon posset and shortbread. Wow. What a great ending to the tea, it was probably my highlight of the meal. Refreshing and light yet still tasting like a fulfilling dessert. I’d go back just for that.

As the afternoon came to and end my Mum, somewhat a connoisseur of tea, commented that it was one of the best afternoon teas she’s had and was already planning her next trip with my Dad.

All in all 9/10 – the perfect weekend treat!
