I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Leicester anymore…

Yes, Curve has been transformed into Oz for this year’s spectacular Christmas show. Firstly, a disclaimer. I’m writing this as a huge fan of The Wizard of Oz. I know every word of that film off by heart, so my nerves were a little on edge as to how this would transfer to stage. But it’s Curve, it’s Nikolai Foster, and they sprinkle fabulous on everything they do.

Packed with original songs from the movie, with a few additions from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Curve’s production will have you toe tapping all the way through as Dorothy travels along the Yellow Brick Road. Georgina Onuorah taking the role of Dorothy has a wonderful voice and as Somewhere Over The Rainbow plays she had Curve enthralled. The first half sees Dorothy swept away to Munchkin Land where she meets Glinda before being sent on her path along the Yellow Brick Road, meeting The Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion along the way. A special mention for Jonny Fines playing the part of Scarecrow, who managed to take my favourite character from the film and portray him perfectly.

For film traditionalists like me, watch out because there are some modernisations. Of course there are. Broomsticks are swapped for scooters and motorbikes, Oz has a dark and futuristic feel and a couple of the songs from the film have been given a musical makeover, but the changes flow through the performance and the story never strays from the one we know and love. In fact there’s even a photo of Judy Garland in homage to the original film, which is a lovely touch.

It’s fun, it’s feel good, it’s like the comfort of childhood jazzed up on stage. Ok ok, I struggled to see the hot air balloon swapped for a spaceship at the end, but don’t we love Curve for putting their own stamp on everything they do? And what a wonderful stamp it always turns out to be.

It’s a Christmas treat for the whole family and one you shouldn’t miss.

The Wizard of Oz runs at Curve until Sunday 8 January. Shows are selling fast and remaining tickets are on sale from curveonline.co.uk.
