Heading out for an Italian in town? There’s one failsafe option and that’s Prezzo on Silver Street. Prezzo has always been one of our go to places so we went along to check out their new summer menu!
I’ve always been a fan of restaurants where the kitchen is semi-open and not hidden away and that’s why Prezzo has always been one of my favourites. For starters I opted for the calamari, which the menu said came with Pestonnaise. I was intrigued! My dining partner decided on Mozzarella in Carrozza (breaded mozzarella with a pomodoro sauce). The service was quick and the starters were with us before we knew it, which considering we were dining on a busy Friday night, was a nice bonus!
The highlight of the starters was without doubt the pestonnaise. If you’re wondering, it’s essentially a creamy pesto type dip. As the plates were taken away I asked the waiter about it and commented on how nice it was and he told us that they’d opted for that over aiolo on the new menu as so many people worry about eating garlic when on a night out. Little things like that are what keeps people like me coming back!
The mozzarella was well cooked and was a perfect combination with the pomodoro sauce (although they also stole some of the pestonnaise). Both starters were also really good portions and both priced at under £6.
Moving onto mains I was trying to be healthy and chose the fillet of salmon whilst my dining partner opted for the traditional meatballs. Now, being quite a connoisseur of meatballs he can be a little fussy, but these he said were some of the best he’d had. The meat tasted of really good quality, which often isn’t the case with meatballs! Once again, excellent portion size.
I was assured when ordering that I’d made a good choice with the salmon so I was intrigued as to what it would be like. The fish was cooked really nicely, not too dry and the saffron sauce complemented it perfectly. The array of vegetables made me not feel too guilty too. So often it can be hard to make healthy choices when dining out, so it’s nice that Prezzo has that covered. If I was forced to pick fault, the salmon was a little salty, but all in all it was a great main course to be recommended.
Could we face dessert? Seeing as it was a Friday night it’d be rude not to. Feeling a little too full but not wanting to miss out, I went for one of their mini desserts and chose the Affogato (vanilla ice cream with a shot of hot espresso coffee). My dining partner went to the opposite extreme and ordered the Nutella and banana mini calzones.
The Affogato did just the trick, a nice sweet ending to the meal without tipping you over the edge! Pouring the coffee over the ice cream caused it to melt into it and created a lovely flavour and texture. The calzones proved to be a slight case of eyes bigger than belly. TIP make sure you have a lighter main if you’re going to be saving yourself up for that pudding! Because believe me mini pizzas filled with banana and chocolate WILL prove too tempting to resist!
We always like to give the staff a mention and at Prezzo they were among the best we’ve had. The waiter Miguel was informative and funny. He talked us through the menu and I even managed to learn all about truffles and Queen Victoria! The manager, Monica, was equally attentive and made us feel very welcome. Looking around you could see they were really taking their time over all of the customers, which on a busy Friday night can be a rarity.
VERDICT – 9/10
Faultless service on a busy Friday night, great menu choice with healthier options available and excellent food across all 3 courses.
We’ll be back soon!
