Pre-theatre dining is one thing that has been a bit of a struggle with events at Curve with not many restaurants being located nearby, but that’s all changed with the reinvention of Curveside on Halford Street.
You probably know Curveside as a sandwich shop in the Cultural Quarter (home to The Twist – the biggest breakfast cob in town), but the team there also open as a bistro in the evenings and offer the perfect pre-theatre dining option.
Curveside offer a full evening menu with main choices including chicken stuffed with brie, king prawn linguine and fillet steak but their pre-theatre menu is a snip at only £14.95 for 2 courses. We went down to sample the menu before skipping next door to see Hairspray.
The business is family run and Roxanne and co. are keen to welcome everyone in, there’s a really cosy feel to the place. Out of the starter choices we opted for prawn cocktail and farmhouse pate. Now, first things first, if you’re like us you’ll want to know about the portion sizes and both were ample for starters. 2 large slices of pate were accompanied by toast and 2 pots of relish and the prawn cocktail came on a bed of lettuce with 4 triangles of bread and butter. I couldn’t complain on the prawn : sauce ratio either. Both simple traditional starters, but done well!
With quick service and friendly staff the time went quickly and there was no need to panic over being late to the theatre, which can happen so often with pre-theatre venues. For main courses we opted for the rump steak with chips and salad and the butterfly chicken with a creamy mushroom sauce with sautéed potatoes and vegetables. Once again the service was swift and the portions that came out were impressive, especially the steak as pictured below.
The steak was requested rare and it came out juicy and perfectly cooked with what my dining partner described as “the best chips I’ve ever tasted”. I had gone for the chicken and there was a good amount of potatoes and vegetables to accompany. The chicken was a good size and nicely cooked, my only comment would be for slightly more sauce, but this is something that could easily be asked for.
Having sat down to eat at around 6.10pm we finished our meal and the time was 7.15pm, perfect timing to nip a few doors down to Curve and grab a quick drink before the 7.30pm performance. No rushing about and no hassle.
We also give a quick note on the service in our reviews and we couldn’t speak more highly of the friendly family approach of the staff at Curveside. Roxanne was most welcoming and certainly made you want to return.
With a full evening menu still to try, we’ll definitely be back again soon!
