Billy Elliot The Musical has long been in the planning at Curve. Now the finished product is finally here on stage and it’s blowing audiences away.
If you think you know the story of Billy Elliot, this new Made at Curve musical production simply takes it to another level. The emotional rollercoaster of a show covers a number of important social topics, grief, difficulties of growing up, losing loved ones, dementia, social interactions, gender identification and so much more. With morals behind the story reminding the audience that in everything you do, always shine, and in everything you do, always be yourself.
The audience was enthralled with the show from start to finish, through emotional segments to roaring with laughter. With punchy language in keeping with the northern roots, it maintains a commitment to the original story but is brought right up to date. The beauty of Nikolai Foster’s impact on this production is clearly shown in how the topics are so beautifully crafted to remain authentic but modern, and emotional but enjoyable.
A special mention must go to the young cast, the majority of whom are from here in the Midlands or have local family connections. Wonderful performances from everyone on stage.
Productions like this are a stark reminder of how fortunate Leicester is to have Curve with the talented team at the theatre creating such incredible theatre. The audience reaction was nothing short of rapturous, with many commenting that it’s the best production they’ve seen in years.
We may all already know the story of Billy Elliot, but for us now, this will be THE Billy Elliot.
