Journeys Festival International Leicester is now in full flow and taking place across Leicester until 30 August. This week performance really takes centre stage with music, theatre and free entertainment.

One of the most anticipated performance features of the festival is Pizza Shop Heroes, which is coming to Curve on Saturday 17 August with shows at 2.15pm and 7.30pm. We’ve also got a pair of tickets to give away to this performance. Skip to the bottom to enter!

Pizza Shop Heroes is the work of four former child refugees from Eritrea, Afghanistan and Albania, who bring their own real life experiences to the stage to give us a sketch show that is loosely set around the counter of an “Indian-Italian pizza shop”. These four boys arrived separately in the UK as unaccompanied asylum-seeking children are now here on stage to make sure the stories they tried so hard to communicate on their own personal journey are heard at last, by transforming their real life struggles to this powerful and funny sketch show.

The production comes from one of the leading refugee theatre groups in the UK, telling the stories of these 4 young men working together in an average pizza shop . Having told their stories to social workers and courts as part of their asylum claims, they’re now reclaiming these words and bringing them to the stage in a hugely different format.

Seeing stereotypes of UK life through the eyes of a newcomer, woven in with stories from prisons in Libya and Greece, to conversations with absent mothers; laughter and empathy are shared in equal measures throughout the performance.

Tickets for the performances are available from the Curve website.

“It will change your perception. It will make you understand more. It is a play that should be seen by all.” North West End *****
