Find Your Fitness

In July we undertook a 5 week personal training course with Find Your Fitness UK. Were we mad? Yes probably, but we were curious just what we could achieve in that time and if personal training was worth the time and money. We learnt an awful lot in the 5 weeks, which we’ll go into, but the short answer is yes. Yes, if you want results then it’s completely worth the time and money. In just 5 weeks we lost 10 inches from over our body, developed biceps for the first time ever and managed to push ourselves further physically than we thought possible.

Find Your Fitness in Wigston are experts at what they do and will tailor packages specifically for you, whatever you end goal may be. We started out with a simple goal – lose weight. “Maybe a stone. I’m going on holiday and just want to feel a bit better.” It’s the same story as countless people have as summer comes around. I’m no stranger to dieting and have tried and been semi-successful on things like Weight Watchers and Slimming World, so how would personal training compare?

The trainers; Andrew, Cliff and Sean will first of all assess your fitness level (if it’s low don’t worry, mine was pretty bad, they won’t be mean!) and from that they can start to put together the best package to help you reach your goal. All those times in the gym where you do a bit on the bike, have a drink, do a bit on the crosstrainer, have a rest, maybe lift a couple of weights… That will go out of the window. I can’t lie, it was tough at times but it goes to prove if you push yourself you can achieve more than you thought possible.

So what are the advantages?

> Your package is tailored specifically for you. You aren’t waiting around for others or wasting time on exercises that won’t help you reach your goal. Everything you do in your time at the gym will be helping you.

> You’ll get great nutritional advice. You’ll learn to think completely differently about food. In my first week I thought I’d been doing well with my food until Andrew pointed out that the only unprocessed thing is eaten was a few spinach leaves in my sandwiches. You’ll soon be thinking about protein content and good fats and really learning about what fuels your body. Believe me, you’ll never want to do a fad diet ever again because if you’re eating the right things there is no need to go hungry!

> Your goals will become a reality. Getting in shape will suddenly become achievable and as you notice your body changing you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. Give it 3 weeks and you’ll wish you started a year ago!

Find Your Fitness UK run group classes as well as personal training. These are also hugely recommended as with small class numbers and highly qualified instructors you’re still enjoying that personal guidance that makes all the difference. If you’re squatting wrong they’ll teach you how (believe me if I can get the hang of it anyone can) and if you’re finding something too challenging they’ll adjust the exercise for you. It’s not daunting and embarrassing, it’s just about learning to get the most out of your body.

I started out with the goal of losing 1 stone. So how did I do?

Well with the adjusted nutrition and 3 training sessions a week we very nearly got there! Slightly under 1 stone but a loss of 10 inches over the body was more than I could have hoped for. If you’ve dieted before you’ll notice the difference with this as muscle weighs more than fat so you’ll learn to not just read what’s on the scales but measure yourself to notice changes. Losing 3 inches off my abdomen in 5 weeks was a bigger result than I ever thought I’d get!

Most importantly of all Find Your Fitness UK make it fun. You won’t sit at home dreading going or making up excuses to cancel because every time you go you’ll realise you’re that bit closer to your goal, they keep you motivated and even let you choose what music you have on to work out to (this helps!)! They will keep a bit of a beady eye on your food diary but you won’t get told off. It’s about learning and long term changes and we all have to start somewhere. I had a few bad moments of cider, ice cream and hot cross buns but still managed to achieve more than I thought possible. So can you and you’ll probably even want to stop having those treats anyway, a feeling of enjoyment soon turns into a feeling of guilt!

Yes, it can be more expensive than a standard gym membership but for the level of guidance and support you get it’s not wasted money, it’s an investment in yourself. And if we’re honest, if you gave up a few cups of coffee and a takeaways this wouldn’t be breaking the bank. Most importantly though, if I can do it, you can do it. I can be rubbish, I like pizza and I like wine, I don’t like running and I don’t play sport. But if I can pull myself together, be motivated by the Find Your Fitness team and lose 10 inches in 5 weeks, then believe me, so can you!!
