Located opposite the new Leicester City training ground, The Coffee Can suffered the lockdown within just a few weeks of trading. Not to be put down by it, owner Rupert has now launched a subscription coffee service.

Inspired by his footballing neighbours the new coffee service is called 5000-1 and allows people to sign up for a monthly subscription with new and different coffees delivered direct to your door every month. The local business will also help local causes with a percentage of every bag going to different local charities.

We caught up with Rupert to find out more about it.

You’re launching 5000-1 coffee, how did this come about?

I started a coffee drive thru called The Coffee Can (follow [email protected] on Instagram) in February of this year, which is opposite the new Leicester City training ground. It’s an idea that I’ve had for about 18 months and I finally got it up and running only for it to be closed within just a few weeks because of the Coronavirus. So rather than wait around I thought about what else I could do to keep my business going. I am a huge football fan and coffee is a big part of my life so I thought about how I could combine these ideas. Being born and raised in Leicester I know what 5000-1 means to people. It’s more than football. Its chasing your dreams and never giving up. It stands for hard work and defying the odds. 5000-1 is the perfect name for this coffee. It’s for the people of Leicester.

You’ll also be helping local causes through this, how will the initiative work?

50p from every bag will be donated to charities in Leicestershire. We will pick a new charity, cause or project every month and send them an amount equivalent to help make a difference locally.

Who are some of your other favourite independents in Leicestershire?

So many to choose from. The fish and chip shop in Rothley. Hannah’s chocolate shop in Quorn. The little donut stand on Leicester market (Rossa’s). The Six Hills Cafe & Pizzeria on the A46. Fosseway Fuels in Thrussington for wood burning supplies is great. It’s all the people that make these businesses’ so good.

Where do you see the 5000-1 coffee brand going in the next 12 months?

I’d love to partner up with Leicester City FC and use 5000-1 as a force for good. I want every season ticket holder, Leicester City fan and coffee lover to buy it.

Where can people buy/get involved?

5000-1 is a subscription coffee so customers get it delivered right to their door. New coffees will come out every month. It’s a great option while people are at home and their helping to support a good cause every time. You can get it from 5000-1coffee.co.uk or call 0116 2988 724 to set up a subscription.
