Times have never been tougher for small independent businesses. One of our favourites, The Tiny Bakery on Clarendon Park Road, has adapted to offer local delivery to those in need as well a cut back hours collection service.

From Creme Egg Cruffins to homemade quiche, it’s a trove of delicious delights. We caught up with them to find out how they’re managing.

How would you describe The Tiny Bakery for anyone who has never visited?

We’re a little independent artisan bakery, specialising in handcrafted pastries, bread and other goodies all made from scratch. We also (usually!) Serve a range of hot and cold drinks using locally roasted coffee, and a small selection of sandwiches/ toasties.

What are some of your favourite items you sell in the bakery?

People rave about our brownie, saying it’s the best they’ve ever had and our almond croissants can’t be matched, even in France. My current fave tho, our hot cross buns…yum.

Do you make everything yourself?

Yes, we make all the yeasted bread, pasties and cakes on site. Our sourdough (currently available on Fridays) is made by Bisbrooke Artisan in Oakham.

What been your highlight since opening?

I think my personal highlight was when I had the opportunity to reopen with a new business partner. I was so sad was when we announced we were closing, but I couldn’t run it on my own. When Sarb came along and offered to come on board I jumped at the chance.

How do you find Clarendon Park as an area to run an independent business?

Clarendon park is the perfect area for us. The local community are passionate about supporting small independents like us, and appreciate the quality of our products. We all try to support each other and there’s a really good rapport among the businesses.

How have you been continuing to serve the community during this difficult time?

The covid virus had thrown us all and we’ve had to adapt. However we know we have a lot of customers who have been self isolating so we decided to start offering a local delivery service. We’ve refused our opening times to enable us to do this on our skeleton staff, and implemented safe guarding measures to reduce the risk of spreading infection.

Who are some of your other favourite independents in Leicester (list up to 3)?

Only 3 favourites…😮 there are so many…I love Archers, we get our sausage roll meat from there, Jamie at Meraki does amazing hair colour and Katy at The Hair Room does the best cut and blow dry ever.

What plans do you have for Tiny Bakery when this is all over?

After covid…who knows or dares to dream… there’s going to be a lot of adjusting. But if we do make it through, it would be nice to have a slightly bigger shop, and we may well keep offering a delivery service. We’re missing lots of our lovely customers.
