It’s been over 5 years now since The Shires transformed into the shiny new Highcross and since then we’ve been treated to the great restaurant quarter in St Peter’s Square. One of the original players and still going strong is Handmade Burger Co so we went down to check out how they’re getting on and sample out the tasty menu. The kind folks there have even given us a meal for 2 to give away in our new competition.

The restaurant was bustling so I’d recommend booking a table in advance if you’re hoping to go on a weekend evening. Warm and friendly service, we couldn’t fault the staff. We ordered milkshakes to start whilst we browsed the menu and both the coffee and banana ones were great. Here’s our tip though – we also sampled a little of the Oreo cookie milkshake. Try it. You will not be disappointed, I assure you.

The burger choices on the menu are vast. There is undoubtedly something for everyone! Choices include everything from a classic cheeseburger to Moroccan lamb burger or Tikka Masala chicken burger, so choosing may take you a while. We finally settled on our choices and my dining partner went for the beef burger with Brie and extra added mushrooms and I opted for one of the speciality stuffed burgers, which came stuffed with mozzarella, pesto and sundried tomato. 3 of my favourite things so my expectations were high! Burgers come as they are without chips so you need to order sides separately and we went for chips and onion rings to share. The waiter assured us the portions were big enough to share so I was hoping he was right!

The food was of a great standard when it arrived and you’ll be relieved to know that the side portions are definitely big enough to share, even if you have a big appetite! We nowhere near finished them between us. The Brie burger was juicy with ample extra mushrooms added on and the stuffed burger was very flavoursome with the bun also spread with pesto. It’s also worth noting that if you’re being health conscious then you can opt to have a side of coleslaw instead of the bun at no extra charge.

Many of the burgers are around £8 so it isn’t a cheap night out once you’ve added on drinks and side orders, but whilst a side of chips will set you back £3.15, as we said the portion sizes are definitely sharer size. We chatted to the restaurant manager who confirmed to us that everything there is about customer service and most importantly emphasised that they’ll never stint on the portions! So if you’re looking for a venue for a meal with friends or looking to please people with different tastes, Handmade Burger Co should definitely be on your list.
