Gay City Bowlers is the UK’s first and only LGBTQ+ ten-pin bowling team. And anyone can join.

Set up as a way of making new friendships amongst the local LGBTQ+ community, the events have been a hit across the UK and now it’s coming to Leicester.

The first Leicester event will take place at Lane7 on 26 February and we caught up with the organisers to find out more.

How did the Gay City Bowlers concept begin?

It was started in Manchester by a small group who had moved there as a means to meet new friends in a safe space for the community.

What will the Leicester event entail?

Think speed dating for friends, there are 2 games, and everyone is mixed up between games, so you meet new people each time.

Who is the event aimed at?

It’s a queer safe event open to everyone – LGBTQ+ and allies

What do events like this mean for the city’s LGBTQ+ scene?

There are very few big mixed social events in the city. It’s a means by which people can come together in a safe space, where the focus isn’t purely about drinking, and enjoy a couple of hours each month doing something fun and hopefully lead to meaningful connections

Are there plans for the event to become a regular thing?

Well date number two is booked in for March already – the aim is once a month, apart from December – normally that is just a social

We have spaces for 35 at this evening, but the likes of Birmingham and Manchester have upwards of 60 people attending each month.
