Since our last food challenge we’ve been scoping out what else we could take on and we soon set our eyes on the Trash Can Challenge at Flaming Grill Pubs. We headed down to the Local Hero at Freemans Common to take on the enormous challenge and here’s what happened…

Location: Local Hero, Freemans Common (challenge available at all Flaming Grill pubs)
Food: A giant rack of ribs, double bacon and cheese burger, beef chilli sundae, chicken skewer, onion rings, corn on the cob, smokey BBQ beans, peas and a TRIPLE portion of chips. It’s so big it will be served to you on a dustbin lid.
Time limit: No time limit on this one, you just need to clear your plate… sorry, trash can.
Price: £19.99

Our big eater was accompanied by his friend on this one to see how each of them would manage. Both guys have a healthy appetite, so this wouldn’t be a problem… right?

It was all smiles at the start.
It was all smiles at the start.

You can’t really appreciate the size of this challenge until you see it and believe us when we say that’s a big trash can they’re bringing out. That triple portion of chips fills up a hefty part of it too.

Both guys started confidently choosing to tackle the burger and the ribs first. The chips dipped into the chilli sundae provided a good side to the meet but it wasn’t long before the giant rack of ribs was starting to fill them up. On the plus side, both commented that the burger and ribs were so nice that they almost forgot they were facing a challenge.

I got this...
I’ve got this…

They soon remembered though…

Getting through it.
Getting through it.

As the burgers were down, the chicken skewers were gone, the ribs were almost done, onion rings down, it soon became apparent that our big eater had made a serious error of judgement in the order he’d chosen to tackle this challenge. The chips, peas and beans were now cold. Dipping the chips in the remainder of the big chilli sundae helped him a little further along the way as our other challenger felt so full that he removed himself from the table for a lie down and a breather before coming back!

Down and out?
Down and out?

The waitress came over to check how we were getting on she told us that she’d only ever seen 2 people defeat the trash can. “The steak and burger challenges we do, we’re always giving out certificates for, but this one is the real challenge. Hard isn’t it?” She declared as both challengers looked on the verge of defeat.

Struggling!
Struggling!

With 35 minutes gone all that remained on our big eater’s plate was a small amount of chips and beans. “Come on you can finish that” we told him. “I can’t. I really can’t. I can’t get them down!

On the verge of defeat.
On the verge of defeat.

Our other challenger hadn’t yet recovered after his lie down.

That was it. We called a day on it and admitted defeat.

A good effort but ultimately defeated by the trash can.
A good effort but ultimately defeated by the trash can.

I could have done it! If I’d done it in a different order I could have done it! I should have left the meat and eaten that cold.

So if you decide to head down to the Local Hero and take on this monster challenge, remember that piece of advice, eat it in the right order and let us know if you manage to defeat it!

The Trash Can Challenge can be taken at Local Hero at Freemans Common, Leicester.
