Coffee, grilled cheese and dessert are things you need during all seasons of the year. One place in Leicester that does them all perfectly is Bru.
Bru has stayed open throughout all 3 lockdowns for both collections and home delivery. Staying positive, super friendly staff and a menu of seasonal specials has kept the Bru magic alive and we caught up with them for this week’s BID Spotlight to find out how they’re getting on.
Bru has stayed open all through the 3 lockdowns, how has it been?
Like many businesses, especially in the hospitality sector, it has been challenging. However, we have a committed team and loyal customers who are equally understanding of the necessary changes and additional precautions we have put in place, both back and front of house for the safety and well being of our Leicester community.
We certainly look forward to welcoming back our customers in-store when it is safe to do so.
Tell us about some of the new additions to the menu
We regularly launch limited edition seasonal items, right now we’re focusing on some of our most popular winter items. Really warming, feel good comfort food, perfect for the current weather.
Our Classic Grilled Cheese. It’s not a sandwich, panini or toastie, it really sits in a league of its own and has been extremely popular at Bru.
Toffee Nut Latte. A shot of our 100% arabica Bru blend coffee served over hot milk with a hint of toffee nut. Non-dairy milks are also available.
Apple & Cinnamon Wafflepop. Freshly made in store, served with custard it’s a perfect cold day treat!
You do a great Working from Home deal, what’s your favourite thing to have from Bru for lunch?
The WFH bundle is available online (Deliveroo, Uber Eats, Just Eat) and has been extremely popular during lockdown, it’s a combo of a Bru Classic Grilled Cheese or one of our popular Bagels and a Bru blend coffee. The Kickin’ Chicken Bagel and Cappuccino has been one of the most popular so far.
My favourite lunch at Bru is a Tuna Melt Grilled Cheese and Flat White with coconut milk.

For those who’ve adopted a vegan lifestyle this year, you also have some great vegan options, can you tell us a little about those?
All of our coffee drinks are vegan, our milk options include almond, coconut, soya and Oatly Barista. One of our most popular hot drinks, the Chai Latte, is now also available as a vegan option.
A lot of people stereotype vegan food and drink as being boring, not at Bru. We have the Bru Vegan Shake which is a blend of raw cacoa and Oreos. Each and every flavour of our hand-made sorbet is vegan, as are our iced refreshers. We have also created a brand new vegan Dark Chocolate Sorbet which is awesome on its own, paired with Bru’s vegan coconut gelato or blended as a shake.
We served vegan mince pies before Christmas and have since extended our range of vegan cakes and traybakes.
Bru will soon be launching further vegan food and drink items, we’re regularly in the kitchen experimenting and working with supply chain to transition products over to being vegan, or developing totally new vegan items for our menu.
What do you think it is about Bru that makes it such a popular coffee shop in town?
It’s a simple combination of people, environment and coffee! We have a passionate team and have really planned the shop design and layout around people and ambience, so we’re greatly looking forward to welcoming all of our customers back for their regular seats in the future. Our coffee is pretty awesome too. We freshly grind our own unique Bru blend which is 100% arabica, ethically sourced and handpicked in Brazil, El Salvador and India. It produces a full bodied espresso with a naturally sweet caramel flavour.
How would you describe Bru to someone who’s never been?
Exceptional coffee, good vibes and tasty food! We’re a local coffee and dessert house with a difference, not just coffee and gelato, but so much more!
