As retail in Leicester suffered the setback of a second lockdown it’s been particularly hard on those businesses who’d re-opened as they were forced to shut their doors once again. One of those shops is the gorgeous, Harriman & Co in St Martin’s.
Selling all manner of beautiful interior items to spruce up your home, Harriman & Co has become a big favourite in terms of independent city centre shopping. As the lockdown continues customers are still able to purchase items to click and collect and we found out more from owner, Drew, for this week’s BID Spotlight feature.
For anyone who’s never visited Harriman & Co tell us a little more about the shop and what you sell?
We love thoughtful design and simple functional objects with a natural, nostalgic feel. Lasting, elemental materials are important to us too; whether that’s glass, timber, stoneware, ceramic or metal. It’s been interesting to watch the zero waste movement gather momentum as it’s always been reflected in what we sell.
Since we’re a small shop, we can buy products in batches to keep things fresh, seasonal and up to date while still stocking our core range.
How have the last 3 months been for you?
We’ve kept ourselves busy – repainted the shop, installed a new till system and launched a new website with click & collect and local delivery options.
For those wanting to click & collect, what are the details?
Online orders are usually ready within a few hours and at the moment can be picked up Monday, Wednesday & Friday mornings between 10-12. Of course when the shop is open again collection will be anytime during our opening hours.
What are some of your favourite items that you have in stock?
I love and also own many of our products, at home I have plates & bowls from Sue Pryke, I love using my stoneware espresso mugs from Petra Wright and the gorgeous linen cushions on my sofa by Kiran Ravilious are all testament that I truly love local. All of these makers can be found creating amazing, useful and beautiful homeware products in and around Leicester & Rutland.
You had a makeover of the shop exterior too, which looks fabulous. What inspired the colour choice?
So I’ve always loved mustard and ochre tones and the shop front was definitely ready for a repaint. I wanted a real change and contrast to the off black we’ve had for the past 6 years. A change to the Mustard Yellow was the way forward, somehow the colour has a real optimistic feel which seems super appropriate for the times we’re living through right now.
How do you find Leicester as a city to be an independent business in?
Loyal customers make it an absolute pleasure to open the doors each day and it’s great to be part of a community. I love the fact that many of us (local businesses & employees) shop and support each other so much.
How would you sum up Harriman & Co in 5 words?
Independent, honest, considered, ethical & stylish!
