One of Leicester’s best loved independent businesses, Gelato Village, has now re-opened its doors for takeaways. We caught up with them to find out what’s in store for this week’s BID Leicester Spotlight.

So when can you get your fix? The award-winning gelato is back with revised opening hours, which are 12pm – 6pm on Thursday – Sunday. In line with all government advice certain steps have been taken to ensure the shop remains a safe environment for everybody. New safety procedures include:

  • One person at a time entering the shop
  • Social distancing maintained at all times
  • No more than 4 customers in the shop at once
  • Contactless payment where possible
  • Card payments only, no cash accepted

Customers are able to enjoy all of their favourite Gelato Village treats including gelato (obviously), coffee, cold drinks, gelollies and retail items, however due to the safety measures in place cones and waffles have not yet been re-introduced.

Gelato Village owner, Daniele Taverna, is especially looking forward to catching up with their customers. “We missed seeing everyone at Gelato Village. Obviously we love seeing our regular customers, but also we really love meeting new people and passing the time of day with them. Just the every day little conversations – that’s what most people have missed during lockdown, not just us!”

And the re-opening couldn’t have come at a better time to make the most of the seasonal specials, Daniele added, “We’re so excited that we haven’t missed the British strawberry season while in lockdown. It was looking touch and go, but we have been over to our friends The Fruit Basket in Nottingham who supply the very best fresh British fruit for our gelato today and so strawberry will be hitting the menu in a few short hours!”

There’s also more gelato based excitement to come as they’re soon to be introducing a a new click and collect service for takeout thermoboxes (0.5 and 1kg). Customers will be able to pre-order gelato for collection, pay online, skip the queue and get even bag themselves discount! The thermoboxes mean you can enjoy even more of your favourite gelato at home, with them keeping it at peak condition for 45 minutes until you get home and put it in the freezer.

Daniele added, “The thermoboxes are a great way of taking a good quantity of gelato away to enjoy at home. They keep the gelato at the perfect temperature for around 45 minutes, but of course you can pop it in the freezer when you get home and save it for another day. Perfect for a Father’s Day surprise perhaps? With our new click and collect service, you’ll also be able to jump the queue when picking your boxes up!”
