Thursday 5 December marks Repeal Day, the celebration of the end of Prohibition in the United States back in 1933. We caught up with Manhattan 34 owner, Marc Van Rooyen, to find out about their plans to mark the occasion.

Some of you may already know that Manhattan 34 is in fact an abbreviation of Manhattan 1934, with the bar’s design taking inspiration from New York City in 1934, just after the repeal of Prohibition.

Marc commented, “Repeal ended Prohibition in December 1933 and the inspiration for Manhattan 34 comes from the type of bars that you’d have found in the city the following year. Big open windows, a celebration of drinking, and exciting cocktails.”

To celebrate Repeal Day, Manhattan 34 have a special menu running from Thursday 28 November – Thursday 5 December, which contains some excellent bourbon and gin based cocktails.

“During Prohibition bourbon was still distilled for “medicinal purposes” and alongside gin, which was often distilled illegally, they will be the basis for our Repeal Day menu that we have running all week. Expect some new twists on Old Fashioneds, Whisky Sours, Gin Sours, and much more.”

Alongside the special menu, throughout the week the bar with celebrate the sounds and sights of the 1930s with electro swing music playing all weekend, as well as seeing the bar decorated in an Art Deco, Al Capone styled theme.

Then on Thursday 5 December the bar will really kick the party off. Leicester based duo, The Verzions, will be providing live music entertainment, taking you back to the sounds of the 1930s and there will be 15% off all drinks on the Repeal Day menu.

“Repeal Day marked the start of a new era that we celebrate every day at Manhattan 34, but we’ll really be getting in the party mood on Thursday 5 December. After Prohibition ended they were able to import new ingredients, liqueurs from France and begin to create some really exciting drinks… which I hope is what people know us for at Manhattan 34.”

The Repeal Day menu runs at Manhattan 34 from Thursday 28 November – Thursday 5 December. The Repeal Day party will take place on Thursday 5 December with free entry, live music, special themed bar decorations and discounted drinks.
