Cookguy is a new addition to Market Place in Leicester city centre, offering a selection of authentic Asian street food and dessert.
We caught up with the owner, Chun, to find out more about the business for this week’s BID Leicester Spotlight feature.
How would you describe Cookguy to someone who has never visited?
We specialise at Asian street food and dessert, and we are most commonly known for our Cookguy™️ Bubble Waffles, on which you can have loads of different toppings to create your own waffle.
If we were visiting for the first time, what should we order?
If you’re feeling hungry, order our customisable sticky rice roll or Taiwan Style Braised Pork rice. If you’re looking for a light snack, our egg and sausage sandwich and chicken legs are excellent. Complete your visit with a Cookguy™️ Bubble Waffle.
What inspired you to open Cookguy?
Our love for authentic Asian street food, cooked by experienced chefs. We have staff from Hong Kong, Macau and Malaysia so we can make sure it tastes exactly the same as you would find the food in Asia.
What are your most popular menu items?
Definitely Cookguy™️ Bubble Waffles, followed by sticky rice rolls and crispy chicken legs. Hong Kong style milk tea and coffee is a must try as well (available in hot or cold).
What’s your favourite thing about running the business?
We love promoting authentic Asian street food to local people. It may be slightly different from what you will normally find here but we insist in bringing the original taste of our food to Leicester and we would love for everyone to try it out.
It is also great to reunite with many people from Hong Kong, as many are forced to flee their hometown due to political suppression in recent years but it’s always nice to see a smile back on their faces when they enjoy our food, reminiscing about the good old times. Especially when Hong Kong parents show their young kids what Hong Kong Street food is like, as some of them were too young to enjoy these food before they left their hometown.
Who are some of your other favourite businesses in Leicester?
I’m not sure if they are independent, but we love the bubble tea from Chatime at High Street, Thai Esarn takeaway on Hinckley Road and the Sichuan Brothers restaurant on London Road.
What else do you have planned in the coming months at Cookguy?
We will have new Cookguy™️ Bubble Waffle flavours in the coming months. And with summer on the way, our Shaved Ice will be a popular hit among the young and the old.
