As the Christmas lights go on the celebrations can officially begin, so Christmas in Leicester launched from 18 November.
There is a jam packed schedule of events and activities in the city this Christmas, so we’re taking a look at what’s coming up for this week’s BID Leicester Spotlight.
What better way to get in the festive mood than with a Christmas movie. There’ll be Christmas film screenings in Green Dragon Square every Saturday from 5pm, with favourites including Home Alone, Miracle on 34th Street, The Polar Express and more.
This year sees the return of the 680 square-metre real ice rink to Jubilee Square. With its clear roof, skaters can show off their best moves, come rain or shine, under the starry sky. The rink opens from Thursday 2 December through until Monday 3 January. There will be quiet sessions as well as themed sessions for Leicester Tigers and Leicester City fans, plus events with a live DJ. Get all the info on the ice rink website.
Experience the bright world of Rhizome this Christmas, as a glowing series of tall structures, gentle colour changing neon ropes and accompanying soundscape takes over the Cultural Quarter skies. Feel a sense of wonder in this powerful visual spectacle that signifies new life hope and positivity… and one of the most ‘Instagramable’ shots in the city! Illuminated daily from 4.30pm – 10.30pm
Santa in the Square
Visit the enchanting snow-covered Christmas grotto in Green Dragon Square. Children of all ages can visit Santa and his elf for free, with those on the nice list will also receiving a wonderful free gift!
Snowfall at Highcross
Highcross will be super Christmassy this year, with guaranteed snow and some icy surprises! From 5 December 12noon – 8pm snow will fall from the skies every 15 minutes plus every Saturday there will be festival walkabout activities for the whole family to enjoy.
The Guildhall Christmas Fair
Visit the beautiful medieval building and pick up some presents on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 November. Support local artists and makers and enjoy a unique festive shopping experience! Refreshments available on site. Entry is £1.
Enjoy Christmas carols, winter folk songs, toe-tapping tunes and a plethora of weird and wonderful instruments at The Guildhall on Sunday 5 December. The live show is brought to life with GreenMatthews’ trademark wit and humour and there is a bar available on site. TICKETS.

Follow and take part in the Firefly trail this Christmas throughout St. Martin’s Square. See if you can you find firefly Fi in one of the shop windows. As you look out for fireflies scan the QR code and listen to the illuminating festive stories written by people in Leicester. All fireflies are made out of found objects by the artist Amy Nicholson from Handmade Theatre. On Sunday 21 November from 11am – 4pm Honey Craft will launch their Christmas book about the Firefly Fly. With a free Christmas tree decorating workshop for families and individuals. Pop by at any time and make your own firefly.
